ReBUILD at CREATE 2025

26 September 2025

The Creative and Engaged Transdisciplinary Research for Health Equity in Africa (CREATE) Conference [opens new tab] will take place in Cape Town, South Africa from 30 September – 2 October 2025.

It is a gathering that seeks to reposition creativity, inclusion, and community engagement as essential drivers of equitable health research and innovation.

ReBUILD will be at the conference and we’d love to see you if you are also attending. Details are:

Session: Artistic methods to support just health systems: Exploring the pros and cons of film – a workshop

When: Wednesday 1 October at 8.30-9.45am (UTC + 2)

Where: Venue 5

Who: The session will be chaired by Rouham Yamout and Joanna Khalil (ReBUILD’s team from American University of Beirut) and will also feature Shahreen Chowdhury (LSTM) and Shrutika Murthy (The George Institute).

What we will cover: The purpose of this workshop is to explore how health systems research teams in diverse contexts (India, Lebanon and Nepal) have harnessed the power of film, both as a mechanism to capture the views and knowledge of health systems stakeholders, and to communicate and advocate to these to those with the power to affect change. The workshop will provide ideas on different models of filmmaking born out of participatory processes, encouraging scholars to consider the ways in which community voice can be shared through film and some of the theoretical and practical challenges associated with this method.

The objectives are to:

  • Explore how the focus films came into being and the advocacy messages and structural inequities that prompted the use of this medium
  • Lay out the practicalities of working in film – whether it’s harnessing participatory methodologies or pursuing partnerships with creative professionals – including the ethical and practical skills needed to navigate the work
